They range from un-started yearlings to seasoned cutting horses, and everything in between.
A few things to remember when selecting a horse.
“Horses teach riders and riders teach horses” The best way to fast track your learning experience with a horse is to get a horse which has “been there and done that”. When I worked for Leon Harrel, he had me riding seasoned cutting horses everyday, so that those horses could teach me about cutting. Over time I was able to start to teach horses how to work cattle myself.
“Green on green makes black and blue” If you are a green rider, don’t buy a green horse. You need a horse that will “fill in” for your lack of experience. You don’t want a horse that bucks you off every time you make a mistake, otherwise you will quickly loose confidence and the desire to ride.
“Try before you buy” It is best if you ride the horse you are thinking about buying before you make the decision to buy. This way you will know if you are a match or not.
